Head Crew Coach

The Academy of Notre Dame de Namur, an independent, Catholic school for girls located in Villanova, Pennsylvania, is seeking a Head Coach for the crew program. Our coaches are actively engaged in the Notre Dame community and embrace the mission and values of St. Julie Billiart and the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.

 

The Head Crew Coach is responsible for coaching, character development, and providing direction to student-athletes to help them achieve a high level of skill, as well as an appreciation for sportsmanship, discipline, and teamwork in rowing. This job requires you to interact thoughtfully and respectfully with student-athletes, fellow coaches, staff, parents, and community members. Positive communication strategies, organizational skills, and safety awareness are key requirements.


Reporting to the Athletic Director, the Head Coach manages most day-to-day aspects of our programs, regattas, equipment, and facilities; works with the Athletic Director to define direction and policies; and supervises our coaching staff.


This is a year-round position. Scope includes:

  • Spring and fall competitive Upper School teams; practice approximately 5 days per week
  • Compete in approximately 5 regattas each season (spring and fall)
  • Spring and fall modified season for Middle School program; practice 1-2 days per week
  • Winter conditioning program, typically 3 days/week for both Upper and Middle School students


Key Elements

1. Follow and uphold the policies and mission statement of the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur.

2. Plan, organize, and direct the the Academy of Notre Dame’s Rowing program, including:

  • Oversee practices and regattas.
  • Organize and lead on-water practices, including setting training plans; assuring equipment is available and operational; assigning coaches, coxes, equipment, and lineups; and providing direct coaching and technical feedback both on and off the water with a shared emphasis on individual and overall boat improvement.
  • Coordinate regatta planning, including defining entries and lineups and ensuring registration by established deadlines.
  • Arrange boat usage and transport. Communicate with other coaches.
  • Manage the action at regattas, which included supervising team and equipment at regatta site, keeping team members and staff informed of schedule and responsibilities, and interacting with regatta officials.
  • Confirm equipment transport arrangements with the Board. Supervise the loading/unloading of equipment.

3. Instruct and demonstrate skill sets and techniques necessary for individual and team

development.

4. Ensure that team rules and regulations regarding conduct and eligibility of the athletes are clearly communicated and followed.

5. Plan, organize, and conduct tryouts for the rowing program; inform Athletic

Department and participants of final selections; maintain the integrity of the selection process.

6. Consult with the Athletic Director regarding any off-season training programs, including

scheduling dates for summer camps/practices, uniform fitting, and pre-post tryout informational parent meetings.

7. Hold informational parent meetings at the beginning of the fall and spring seasons for all levels. 

8. Create a safe environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

9. Work directly with school athletic trainer in reporting injuries, teaching precautions and

procedures to ensure staff/student safety, and helping students prevent injuries. 

10. Model good sportsmanship behavior and maintain appropriate conduct towards opposing teams, fans, parents, officials, spectators, and community.


Job Requirements

  • Applicants for this position must have previous high school or college coaching experience and a US Rowing Level 1 certification.
  • The applicants must possess a positive coaching philosophy, and excellent communication and organizational skills.
