Position Summary: The Haverford School is seeking a full-time first-grade teacher to start with the 2026-2027 school year. Preferred candidates will have at least 3 years of elementary school teaching experience, an understanding of all boys' education, a commitment to relational teaching, a solid understanding of differentiated instruction, and a strong understanding of instruction aligned with the science of learning.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Employ teaching methods to deliver the school’s instructional program that considers the individual needs, interests, abilities, and maturity levels of the students
- Build strong relationships with students and integrate social and emotional learning throughout teaching
- Design and communicate learning experiences with a clear purpose, helping students connect daily work to meaningful learning goals
- Build partnerships with families and communicate effectively with them about the academic, social, and emotional growth of their child
- Provide a structured, supportive, encouraging, and creative classroom environment
- Monitor carpool, lunch, recess, and playground as assigned
- Possess an understanding of character, culture, and community, and the implementation of those principles in independent schools.
- Perform all other duties, tasks, and assignments as directed by the Head of the Lower School
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree
- Early childhood/elementary skills and experience
- Ability to plan and implement developmentally appropriate lessons
- Effective communicator, both verbally and in writing, with colleagues and parents
- Enthusiastic interest in teaching, motivating, and mentoring lower school students
- A role model for students
- Willingness to collaborate with peers
- Has engaged in professional development on the science of reading, visible learning, social and emotional learning/development, and equity/inclusion.
- Experience with classroom management and positive behavior support systems
- Has experience designing and implementing a diverse curriculum that promotes equity and inclusivity.
- Proven ability to establish and maintain positive and productive working relationships with individuals from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds
- Sense of humor, enthusiastic and happy; high ethical professional standards, and
multicultural perspective
Desired Qualifications
- Familiarity with current research on the education and learning styles of boys
- Pennsylvania Level I or II certification
- Aptitude in teaching children with varying abilities and learning styles
- Experience teaching literacy aligned with the science of reading and writing and math aligned with principles of spaced learning and visible learning.
- Familiarity with Canvas, Second Step, positive behavior support systems, a comprehensive literacy program, and an understanding of the fluency of skills and application of mathematics.
- Experience collaborating with colleagues to solve problems, including participation in conflict resolution, and flexibility and thoughtfulness to work toward common goals.
Required Physical Characteristics
- Works in an environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
- May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time.
- Occasionally lift up to 10 lbs.
- Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled office environment.
- Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
