Job Description: The Haverford School is seeking a part-time Visual Art teacher. The preferred candidate will have at least two years of teaching experience. The candidate is a happy, enthusiastic individual who has demonstrated a passion for visual arts and teaching that builds interest in, enthusiasm for, and mastery of the creative process. Many classes focus on creative problem-solving through contemporary and traditional drawing, painting, and printmaking methods. The candidate will possess a collaborative spirit and be eager to work closely with other creative artists/educators striving to create authentic and powerful learning experiences in a diverse community of boys.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
● Teach a minimum of two sections of visual arts classes. Current course descriptions are linked here but are open to modification based on teacher experience and expertise.
o Prepare course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts.
o Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records.
o Evaluate and grade students’ class work, assignments, and papers.
o Plan, evaluate, and revise curricula, course content, course materials, and methods of instruction.
● Assist in the display of student artworks in school exhibition spaces.
● Plan and coordinate curriculum with the department head and other art instructors.
● Possesses an understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion and the implementation of those principles at independent schools
● Other duties, as required
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
● An undergraduate degree in visual arts, art education, or training and/or experience in a position with similar responsibilities
● An undergraduate degree in visual arts or training and/or experience in a position with similar responsibilities
● Effective communicator, both verbally and in writing, with colleagues, students, and parents
● Strong organizational and communication skills
● Sense of humor, enthusiasm, and happiness, ethical professional standards, and a multicultural perspective
● Demonstrates cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions
Preferred Qualifications:
● Two years of teaching experience is desirable.
● Skills necessary: traditional and contemporary drawing, painting, and printmaking.
● A working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and other common imaging software.
● A working knowledge of Macintosh operating systems and the ability to troubleshoot minor day-to-day related tech issues.
● Understanding of art history and knowledge of contemporary art practices.
● Working artists/teachers preferred.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
● Works in an environment with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
● May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time.
● Be able to occasionally lift up to 20 lbs.
● Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled office environment.
