Position Title: Director of Afterschool Programs
Germantown Academy is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory day school located on a beautiful 126-acre campus in the Fort Washington suburbs near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The school serves more than 1,200 students in grades PK-12. Position Purpose
Reporting to the Assistant Head of Lower School and the Director of Operations, the Director of Afterschool Programs provides strategic leadership and day-to-day management of SPARK, After School Activity Programs (ASAPs), and designated summer programs. The Director oversees program operations, student safety, staff supervision, enrollment, family communication, and budget management while ensuring a safe, engaging, and high-quality experience for students and families. This is a 12-month staff exempt position with an excellent array of benefits and a competitive salary. The position does not qualify for tuition remission.
Key Responsibilities
1. Program Leadership
- Maintain an on-campus presence from 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. (school year); 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (summer)
- Oversee the daily operation of SPARK, ASAPs, and assigned summer programs.
- Oversee programming, registration, and staffing for non-school days or half-days when Full Day SPARK is in session.
- Ensure student safety, supervision, and well-being.
- Develop program schedules, curriculum, policies, and procedures.
- Manage student behavior and partner with families and school leadership as needed.
- Ensure program spaces are organized, well-equipped, and conducive to learning and play.
2. Staff Leadership & Supervision
- Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate program staff
- Foster a collaborative, positive team culture through coaching and professional support
- Manage staffing records and payroll documentation in partnership with school offices
3. Family Engagement & Program Administration
- Serve as the primary contact for families
- Communicate program information, policies, registration, and student updates
- Support families with registration and online enrollment systems
- Promote programs through school communications and marketing efforts.
4. Operations & Financial Management
- Oversee enrollment, attendance, dismissal, and student records
- Manage registration systems and maintain accurate program data
- Develop and monitor program budgets, financial reports, billing, and supplies
- Coordinate facilities, logistics, and compliance with school health and safety policies
5. Summer & Auxiliary Programs
- Partner with Auxiliary Programs staff to support summer programming and school-wide events.
- Assist with staffing, planning, and continuous improvement of summer programs.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Recreation Management, Child Development, or a related field; equivalent experience considered.
- Experience leading youth, afterschool, camp, or educational programs.
- Demonstrated success supervising staff and managing program operations and budgets.
Leadership & Interpersonal Skills
- Excellent organizational, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work productively with school leadership, lead teams, manage multiple priorities, and solve problems proactively.
- Commitment to student safety, exceptional customer service, and family engagement.
- Professional judgment, discretion, and a collaborative approach to working with faculty, staff, students, and families.
Technology
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Experience with registration, database, scheduling, and student information systems, or the ability to learn new technologies quickly.
