Lansdowne Friends School is a small, diverse independent elementary day school serving students from ages PK through 6th grade, located in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania. The position is quarter-time, follows the academic calendar, and reports to the Head of School. The selected candidate will have choice in when the teaching occurs (e.g., all on one day, two days, etc.).
The position includes the following tasks:
- Curate and manage the collection: select, catalog, and weed books and materials that reflect diverse voices, ages, and reading levels appropriate for pre-K through 6th grade, with attention to representation and inclusion consistent with Quaker values.
- Teach weekly library classes: deliver developmentally appropriate lessons in literature appreciation, research skills, and information literacy for pre-Kindergarten through 6th grade, one 40-minute section per week (seven periods total per week).
- Support classroom teachers by collaborating on curriculum connections, pulling thematic book collections, and co-planning lessons that reinforce classroom content through literature.
- Foster a love of reading through book talks, author visits, reading challenges, and creating an inviting, accessible library space for students to explore independently.
- Manage library operations: oversee circulation systems, maintain the physical space, track budgets for new acquisitions, and handle repairs/replacements of materials.
- Model and teach digital citizenship and research literacy, including age-appropriate instruction in using reference tools, evaluating sources, and (at the older grades) navigating technology responsibly.
- Participate in school community life: contribute to all-school programming (assemblies, Meeting for Worship, cultural observances like Black History Month), and serve as a collaborative, visible member of the broader school community.
Candidates must have a Bachelor's degree in library science or commensurate experience in a children's library setting. Familiarity with the Responsive Classroom and Quakerism is desirable.
